A new chapter in Fast Fashion

Fashion Editors threaten to skip Milan Fashion Week

Oh-oh. The SS12 collections have just been presented and we are already thinking about next year’s schedule. But that’s the Fashion Industry, right?

The CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) and la Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana (in English: the National Chamber for Italian Fashion) present… Americans vs Italians: Battle of the Catwalks. Four Fashion capitals involved.

After three years of having agreed that NY Fashion Week would start the second Thursday of each September, revolution is on its way. Milan says that the agreement would last for only 3 years as temporary agreement whilst New York keeps their schedule strong. The whole discussion is about Milan having a week delay on their production if they are forced to adapt their Fashion Shows’ schedules to follow up with NY’s. The National Chamber for Italian Fashion made the decision to re-arrange their schedules leaving the whole Fashion industry astonished, as it overlaps with both NY and London’s Fashion Week. The schedule for the Spring 2013 collections would remain as follows:

  • New York: September 13 to 20
  • London: September 21 to 25
  • Milan: September 19 to 25
  • Paris: October 2 to 10
That meaning that Milan will share one day with New York and completely overlap with London (who can’t really change their schedule due to the Olympics and Paralympics). But if the “battle” is New York vs. Milan, why is London the target? The British capital being commercially weakest of the 4 Fashion Weeks makes it the collateral damage of this Battle of the schedule. Paris is the only not to mess with, and plays a neutral part, as none of the schedule changes would affect its shows. But, there are so many factors to value… New York has always been describes as overlong, Milan as overrated. But when it comes to choosing between cities… would they go Marc Jacobs or Gucci? Not only the Fashion houses are involved in this mess, but the fact that it’s an international affair will affect Buyers, Editors, Advertisement, PR, Models… In this Battle of the Money, it all comes down to business. May the best win.
